This beautiful vehicle is in excellent condition and is completely original and perfect. We speak about a Rolls-Royce (Production in 1950: 3 LHD/3 RHD worldwide!), which is extraordinary and has flawless details. Historically speaking, it is of significant importance.

The current owner acquired this vehicle in 1982 from the company Auto Becker in Dusseldorf, Germany. The vehicle was in a desolate condition but that did not prevent him from acquiring it. The previous owner had been an American doctor practicing medicine in London. He had used the car to make house calls. This handling left quite a path of destruction on the body. The materials used for the coachwork were wood and aluminium. The retrofitting of a steel sliding roof and a gold-metallic paint job did not bode well for the sensitive body. At the time of purchase, the vehicle was rated with a grade of 4 to 5.

Worldwide, a total of only six vehicles with such a coach were built in 1950, during a time of mass production and sheet steel coachwork. The coach of this Silver Wraith is the creation of the well-known coachbuilders H. J. Mulliner & Co. The origin of the old fashion carriage making is clearly visible in the coachwork. A wood frame of ash served as the base for the respective sheeting, even though aluminium was used for this Silver Wraith. Post Second World War and in a time of sheet steel body mass production, the traditional way of manufacturing a coach was used for luxury vehicles only. In 1996, handcrafted coachwork was finally put to an end with the production stop of the Rolls-Royce Corniche.

The list of deficiencies runs in accord with the materials used to build the coach for the Silver Wraith. The dampness, which already caused damage to the ash wood frame throughout the years, was intensified with the retrofitted sliding roof. The subsequent gold metallic paintjob caused considerable damage to the handcrafted aluminium lining in the form of oxidation. The upcoming complete restoration was not to be delayed much longer.

The luxury old-timer was returned to London in 1982, in order to return it to the state of its origin, which could only be done by coachbuilders who still understood their handcraft. The entire vehicle was disassembled, the motor, the transmission and the break system were completely overhauled. Due to the exceptional Rolls-Royce quality the work put into restoring the chassis was limited. In regards to spare parts there was no barrier for rebuilding this vehicle. Next to a large pool of spare parts which the restoration company was able to draw from, Rolls-Royce offers a exceptionally good service for this kind of work.
The biggest part of the restoration was the coachwork. It had to be completely rebuilt by hand. All damaged struts had to be replaced and the aluminium roof skin had to be created by hand because the sliding roof was not intended in the original form. All lining elements were replaced. In total it took over four and a half years to restore this vehicle, from 1982 to 1987. This extensive period of time was not just due to the amount of work that had to be invested in the restoration but also due to the work and pay modalities “work & pay”, i.e. the restoration was done on a quarterly basis and afterwards reviewed, approved and paid by the contractor. Thereafter new restoration goals were discussed and a new contract was put in order.

The reward for all costs and efforts is a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith “Enclosed Drive Limousine”, which today is in an excellent condition and is now graded with a rating scored of 1 rather than 4 to 5. The entire technology was restored and all chrome details are now in a flawless condition. The paint job is back to its old traditional color “Midnight Blue” and due to the use of original materials (leather for the chauffeur cabin and “West England Cloth” for the main cabin) the interior was put back in a state worthy of a Rolls-Royce.

The original condition of the vehicle was as far as possible restored. Merely the turn-signal indicator system including hazard flasher substitute the old blinker system, which still remains on the vehicle. Upon the owner’s request the car was fitted with white wall tires, which were put-on after the restoration process was complete. Because the vehicle was put back in its original condition, the steel sliding roof was removed and a air condition was put in its place to cool the passengers on hot summer days. The Silver Wraith is a reliable companion and nothing stands in the way of a spur-of-the-moment tour even for a longer period of time.

The roughly 2,100 kilogram heavy Silver Wraith is equipped with a six cylinder engine with a total of 4,275 cc cylinder capacity. This equals to 132 HP and a final speed of 150km/h.
